Homosexuality in films

In recent years homosexuality has begun to become a topic more widely covered in film, from independent films to hollywood blockbusters. These are some examples:
- Firstly a recent film, from 2015, that follows the love story of two women in 1950s America. Although a very good film, rated the number one LGBT film of all time, this is not really a trailer we can be inspired by for our media

- Secondly, an independent film made in 2011 that follows the love story of two men that develops over one weekend. This film is set in a very social realism style genre which is something that is a main focus of our trailer. However, they are very accepting of their homosexuality and therefore the film has a very different feel and focus to ours

- Finally, this is a film from 2005 about two men who fall in love but try to hide it by marrying women and forgetting about each other. It features big hollywood names such as Heather Ledger and Anne Hathaway which is effective in making homosexuality a less "taboo" subject as it shows that these famous celebrities are supportive and accepting of it. It was also the first time that two gay characters had really been showed in a romantic relationship and it is impossible to ignore how important it was in moving forwards the gay rights movement and how homosexuality is portrayed in film. Although this film follows a similar sort of storyline to ours it features adults and is set in western America which makes the shot type and music very different to ours and we cannot be very inspired by it

This is a video I found on the history of homosexuality in film that was created after gay marriage was legalized in America. I found this very useful as it helped me to understand why there has been so little positive portrayal of homosexual characters in the media until recently and what sort of portrayal can help to reverse the negative stereotypes of gay people in real life
