After looking at the first completed draft of our storyboard we decided that it was lacking in a strong narrative. After having had to change some of the key elements of our plot the whole trailer didn't really make sense any more and it didn't flow in an effective manner. It was loosing sight of the genre and conventions of a trailer. So we decided instead of constantly changing little aspects of the trailer to try and make it fit we would have a complete change of narrative. We decided to look into the idea of having our main character battle with an internal conflict. At first we considered a mental health issue, but this is a topic that has been covered a lot in the media and we wanted to focus on something different. So we therefore came to the idea of our main character coming to terms with the fact he is gay. To come up with a narrative we looked into existing films on this topic and came across a trailer that has heavily inspired us.
Although before watching this trailer we had already come up with the idea of having our main character fall in love with a man and question his own sexuality it was when we watched this that the idea fully formed in our minds and came to life. We were inspired by the narrative and the way it was portrayed, the idea that their 'love' is very subtle throughout most of the trailer and it is only at the end that it is confirmed. This idea of presenting the audience with two possible genres is very effective here just as I saw when researching 'Interstellar' for my 'Inception' trailer. It helps to broaden the target audience and interest a wide range of people and this is something we are definitely going to use by combining Social Realism with Romance. We were also very inspired by some of the specific shot types used here. The medium close up at the end that shows them standing with their faces close together presents an effective way of showing strong intimacy without actually showing anything which is something we are going to use throughout. Even though the film looks beautiful being shot in an idillic village in France and fits well here this is not something we are going to use as we want to incorporate the Social Realism genre and therefore will be setting ours in the city/suburbs.
We then came up with a spider diagram of our first thoughts on how our new idea would work and began to research into the genre of Romance.

This film looks beautifully shot. What will you take from this trailer? is it just the narrative? is there something about the mise en scene that yo feel might reflect this story well?
